BioEden Building Rankings
Footprint first: the spine is S-tier, the Orb Factory is a trap if you spam it.
BioEden ranks buildings by footprint, not by how impressive they look on a hex. You play on a grid. Every solar pylon, pipe, radar dish, humidifier, incubator, and Orb Factory occupies space, draws energy, and nudges pollution and Impact Level. Official FAQ copy says there are no fail states and that recycle returns the resources. That is why this list is allowed to call a factory a trap: you can always tear it down. You should often tear it down.
This is pre-launch advice from the Steam tutorial plus what Broken Arms Games told press about building only what the next purification or species step requires. It is not a multiplayer meta. Pair it with the power and water spine and the longer recycle walkthrough in restore the planet. If you have not placed anything yet, Getting Started is the build order; this page is the argument about which icons deserve a second copy.
Rank by footprint, not by unlock excitement
S — Solar generators and water distributors. These are the spine. Every later structure hangs off electricity, and many also hang off water. One of each, with the shortest cables and pipes that reach the buildings you actually turned on, is the entire early game. A second solar pylon is not automatically S. A second pylon is B until the first one is saturated. Hover before you confirm. If the tooltip still shows spare output, you are about to pollute for a feeling.
S — Incubators (inside the dome). The tutorial calls the incubator the initial stage of a species. Without it, the Bestiary is a catalog. With it, Landowl can exist. Incubators are S because they convert DNA into a living animal, which is the Cosmic Collective’s actual request. They are not S if you stamp four of them into an un-tuned room. Place one. Match temperature and humidity. Then stop. Cocoons sit in the same S-band once you are tending a species that needs them; official copy tells you to gather DNA samples and place cocoons, then keep the climate honest.
A — Humidifiers and air conditioners. These are how a dome becomes a biome instead of a greenhouse with a bird in it. Landowl’s 20–45° and 55–90% humidity window is wide, and you still need the machines when the room drifts. They draw water and power, which is why they are A and not a free decoration. Unlock related devices through the biome knowledge tree described on the DNA and Bestiary page, then place only the unit the panel is asking for.
A — Radar. Radar pushes the fog off hexes so you can salvage, purify, and find the next dome site. It is A because exploration is half the loop. It is not S because radar is still a building with a footprint. Everyeye’s session included the classic mistake: so many purification machines, solar panels, and extraction tools that the planet still read as dying. Radar is often that extra tool. Expand the fog one ring. Recycle the dish if the ring is mapped and the globe is angry.
B — Extra production you cannot name a request for. A second factory, a decorative cluster of lights, a spare pipe run that looks like a city. B means “allowed when a Collective Request or a guild task actually names it.” B does not mean “spam to look busy.” Idle buildings still pollute.
Trap — Orb Factory spam. The Orb Factory produces orbs. It also lists a heavy energy draw and a large pollution hit on the tooltip. That tooltip is the game telling you production is never free. If a request wants orbs, build the smallest number that completes the chore, then recycle. If you are building Orb Factories because they look like the “real” management game, you have missed BioEden. The rank is not “never touch the recipe.” The rank is “this is how Keepers kill a planet while feeling productive.”
Recycle is the real S-tier tool
The recycle control at the bottom of the HUD is not a late-game cleanup. It is how you undo a greedy ten minutes and get every resource back. Broken Arms Games has said the intended play is to build only what the next step requires, to power down what you might want later, and to dismantle the rest. That is the whole building meta. Letters on this page are just names for that habit.
Guild choice changes how painful extra structures feel. Everyeye described a technological guild that leans into more buildings and a restoration-leaning guild that prefers recycle and can punish overbuilding harder than the baseline. Euler’s cheaper, stronger construction on the guild rankings makes the S-tier spine kinder. Umbra makes the trap meaner, which is the point if you already like tearing things down. No guild makes Orb Factory spam free.
Animals do not rank your pylons. A perfect Landowl hatch still sits in a dome that needs power and water from outside. If the globe is sick, the bird is not the fix. See the animal rankings for spending DNA; come back here for spending hexes. Charles will introduce debris, solar, water, and the incubator in that order for a reason. He is not going to cheer a factory ring. The Charles page covers that tutor voice.
A calm build order you can reuse
Walk the hexes. Salvage wreckage. Place one solar source and one water source. Connect the shortest run to one incubator and the climate machines the first species requires. Complete a Collective Request only when the globe can afford it. If the request wants four Orb Factories and your pollution slice is already loud, recycle something else first. Requests are a to-do list, not a timer. The campaign is 15–20 hours; you have the hours.
On 3 September 2026 the full game is scheduled to add guild modifiers on top of this same spine. The demo save will not come with you. That is fine. The building rank does not depend on the save. It depends on whether you can look at a busy hex ring and still hit recycle.
When the planet widget looks worse than the park inside the dome, believe the widget. Recycle the Orb Factory first, then spare radar, then the extra pylon you placed because the first one was off-camera. Keep solar, water, and the incubator. That demolition order is this tier list in practice, and it is the only S-tier combo that still works when the 3 September 2026 campaign starts asking for more than a tutorial planet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What should I build first in BioEden?
Salvage debris, then one solar generator and one water distributor. The power and water guide is the spine; this page is which extras to refuse.
Is the Orb Factory bad?
As a spam building, yes. It drains energy and spikes pollution. Build it for a request, then recycle using restore the planet.
Are incubators part of the building tier list?
Yes. They are S-tier because they turn DNA into a living species. Hatch order still follows the animal rankings.
Does recycle really return everything?
Official FAQ copy says recycling reverses placements and returns materials. There are no fail states. Practice it in the demo guide.
Will guilds change building ranks?
Modifiers may make extra structures cheaper or more punishing. Euler versus Umbra is the guild rankings question, not a reason to skip recycle.
