How to Play the BioEden Steam Demo
Tutorial only, with Charles — and a globe that punishes extra buildings.
The playable Steam demo is BioEden’s tutorial, not a slice of the 15–20 hour campaign. Broken Arms Games and Focus Entertainment drop you on a wounded hex planet with Charles, the robot companion, and ask you to learn salvage, a tiny solar and water spine, one dome, and one species before the full game is scheduled for 3 September 2026. Treat the session as rehearsal. Demo saves do not transfer. The full game lets you skip this same tutorial.
If you want a minute-by-minute first hour rather than a demo inventory, start with Getting Started. This page is the packing list: what the tutorial includes, where Keepers get stuck, and what never carries forward.
What the Steam demo actually includes
You arrive as a Foundation Keeper of the Cosmic Collective. Charles walks the camera first — move, rotate, zoom, interact — using the prompt bar at the edge of the HUD, then points at debris. Recycle wreckage into resources. Place a small solar generator and a water distributor. Connect them with the shortest cables and pipes you can draw. Those two networks are the spine every later building hangs off, including radar, humidifiers, and the Orb Factory.
Inside the first dome the incubator is the initial stage of a species. Place it on the floor, follow the open steps, then spend DNA fragments in the Bestiary. That is the UI name. Tabs cover Forest, Jungle, Prairie, Savannah, and Tundra. Highlighted animals can be unlocked with Analyze. Landowl, Slink, Ributs, Basker, Fimble, Thudder, and Mirra sit on those lists with DNA prices on the panel; Landowl wants roughly 20–45° temperature, 55–90% humidity, and Fern. Match the climate before you stamp a zoo. Keep carnivores off herbivore tiles. The longer care loop lives in animal care and the DNA / Bestiary page.
The guild screen in the demo is a training path. Euler, Orin, Darwin, Xylar, and Mystic Guild Umbra are the five full-game guilds; they are not what Charles tutors here. Pick the training route so the prompts stay readable. You can still preview philosophies later with the guild picker and the guild tier list.
Collective Requests and Active Regulations already appear. Requests ask for factories, purification, or impact cuts. Regulations are the rules currently in force on this planet. Neither is a fail timer. BioEden has no fail states. The recycle control undoes placements and returns all resources.
The pollution trap Keepers hit first
The trap is treating the demo like a city builder with infinite sprawl. Extractors, extra solar, radar, and especially an Orb Factory each consume energy and nudge pollution and Impact Level. The globe widget at the top of the HUD is the real score. A Jungle hex at 8% looks healthy. Red Forest at 65% is a named site still carrying scars. A Prairie at 95% is not flavour text; it is the planet telling you the footprint is too large.
Charles will say the planet has a high pollution level and that miners help clean surrounding land. That is true in a narrow sense and disastrous if you stamp a ring of them. Everyeye’s preview team did the same thing in Paris: three balanced domes, plenty of solar, and a globe that still looked dead. A developer had to step in and explain the intended play — build only what the next purification or species step requires, recycle what you do not use, power down what you might want later.
If your Prairie is already in the nineties, stop expanding. Recycle idle buildings. Purify the nearest lake. Do not complete a Collective Request that wants more Orb Factories until the globe cools. The restore the planet walkthrough is the longer recovery sequence; power and water explains why a short cable is cleaner than a pretty grid. If the camera is why you double-placed pylons, read controls.
Incubator, Bestiary, and the training guild
Stay with one incubator until its stages complete. Charles is explicit: adaptation inside the dome is divided into stages, and each stage has requirements you can read on the panel. Temperature and humidity windows come first. Native plants and food bowls come after. A watering hole does nothing if the air is wrong.
When the first species is calm, leave the dome. Radar opens hex fog. A research building feeds the biome knowledge tree so plants and DNA unlock per biome instead of as a global zoo. Do not clone one climate across every dome; a Tundra creature in a Savannah hex costs extra infrastructure. The biome guide is the map of that mistake.
Charles has a short roster page at Charles. He is a tutor, not a second player. BioEden is a single-player management game.
What does not carry into the full game
Focus is explicit: demo saves are not compatible with the 3 September 2026 release on Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch 2. You can skip the tutorial there. Guild choice, the longer knowledge trees, and the Great Unraveling mystery sit in the full 15–20 hours. The Steam listing prices the game at $21.99 / £17.99 / €21.99, with a 9% pre-order discount until launch.
Play the demo once without restarting unless you want to practice recycling a crowded Prairie. Note which guild you would pick on launch day. Check demo updates if the tutorial build changes, and launch for the platform calendar. The review is the honest pre-launch read from this same demo plus press. The demo’s job is to make you suspicious of extra buildings. If you leave with one living animal, a tiny grid, and a globe that can still be healed, you learned the game.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Does the BioEden Steam demo save into the full game?
No. Focus states demo saves are not compatible with the 3 September 2026 release. You can skip the tutorial in the full game. See Getting Started for the first-hour sequence.
What does the demo include?
The tutorial: Charles, salvage, a small solar and water spine, one dome, the incubator, and the Bestiary. Guilds in the demo are a training path. Details on species sit in animal care.
Why is my planet at 95% pollution in the demo?
You overbuilt. Recycle unused structures — all resources return — then purify water. Follow restore the planet instead of adding factories.
Which guild should I pick in the demo?
Use the training path so Charles can tutor. Euler, Orin, Darwin, Xylar, and Umbra are full-game guilds. Compare them in the guild picker.
Is the Steam demo the whole 15–20 hour game?
No. It is the tutorial only. Length, guilds, and the Great Unraveling sit in the full game scheduled for 3 September 2026. Timing lives on launch.
